Activities for World Book Day

We were delighted again to celebrate World Book Day in St. Louis Infants School on March 2nd and 3rd. There was an air of excitement in school all week in the run up to the big event as children discussed what character they would be dressing up as and which book they would be getting with their World Book Day token. Every year the day has grown bigger and better and this year was no exception with all classes putting in a great effort to surround the children with a wide variety of books to read and fun activities based on storybooks to enjoy.
With the arrival of World Book Day, all the children in school got an opportunity to go to the local bookshop Eason’s and choose a book for themselves to take home in exchange for their World Book Day token. The children really enjoyed the experience of choosing a book and we would like to thank the management and staff in Eason’s for making us feel so welcome and allowing the children experience the wonderful atmosphere in the store.
With World Book Day being a day to celebrate authors, illustrators, books and most importantly reading, it was fitting that the ‘Big Boys from 5th and 6th class’, our ‘Reading Buddies’ from St Mary’s Boys School came to join us and read a selection of books to our smaller children. Both sets of pupils took great enjoyment from the stories being read and loved interacting with each other, selecting stories and pointing out plots and characters within the stories.
The children ended the day with all classes going to the PE hall to enjoy an amazing catwalk parade of the wonderful storybook characters that were in school that day from ‘The Big Bad Wolf’ to ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’. We even had our very own author and superhero ‘Super Thomas’ aka Thomas Garvey who had written and illustrated his ‘Super Thomas’ book himself. He got an opportunity to read it aloud to everyone in school, which we all loved and we can’t wait to see his fabulous talents as an author continue to grow. It really was a truly magical few days for everyone involved. A big congratulations to all the parents for the time and effort spent designing and making the costumes with the children and most importantly for spending time reading to your child.

A special word of thanks to Ms.Burns for organising all the exciting activities for Worls Book Day,

Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body!!
